Jan 18th, 2021- Home Away from Home

It's such a weird feeling being so comfortable in someone else's house. From the moment we walked in, it felt like home. The dishes are where I would expect them to be. The scent is similar to something I would use myself. They have the same towels, they eat the same food. They even had whiskey in their cupboard. We slept like babies in our ridiculously comfy beds. This definitely doesn't feel like a typical airbnb. We are already making plans to come stay here again next winter!

Phoenix is beautiful this time of year. It's between 75 and 80 degrees with sunny skies. The town is really nice as a whole. The roads are clean and easy to drive. The buildings are in good repair and it was a nice surprise to find parks on almost every corner. I can totally understand why people come here to live in the winter. It's definitely a tropical paradise if you enjoy city living, good restaurants, and shopping. But it's missing the water you would associate with vacation for me. Although most homes here have pools, there are no beaches, rivers, or lakes to spend time at. It's a playground for the wealthy but for people with less means, there is no real "free" paradise to spend time outdoors so you end up with the heat but not the leisure of vacation. We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to come and enjoy, but this isn't a place we would choose to live.

We were hoping to spend some time in the Navajo nation during our two weeks here. We wanted to see the reservation and ride horses through Canyon deChelley. Unfortunately for us, the Navajo chose to close the destinations on tribal property as a precaution against Covid-19. We are disappointed but I'm also thankful they are protecting their most vulnerable. The more pure the bloodline, the higher risk they will have as they were not historically exposed to as many pandemic viruses over the last couple hundred years. We are still going to look around and see if we can find some of their stores and artwork that might be open, wish us luck!

The weather forecast changed unexpectedly yesterday. It looks like we have a thunder and rainstorm to look forward to in a couple of days. This will be a real treat for us! We are hoping to work on the back patio and watch the rain come down on Wednesday with some warm coffee. And then it looks like it's going to clear up by the weekend which is good timing since we want to take the kids to the Grand Canyon.

We took some time to tour one of the Phoenix malls to get Greg a pair of shoes (he left his boots in Las Vegas), get Lance a pair of polarized glasses, and to get Ava some sandals since wearing only one pair of shoes every day is making her little feet sore. I also found a bikini on clearance and brought that home in case we wanted to go swimming while here. It's only been a day here but we are very comfortable and settled. The perfect home away from home to work and play before our next destination.
